A plasticity-based gradient-enhanced smeared cracking model and a bond-slip interface are used to simulate the crack spacing in a reinforced concrete tensile bar. A Rankine failure surface dependent on the Laplacian of an equivalent inelastic strain measure is employed. The model incorporates an internal length scale and yields finitely sized fracture process zones as well as a realistic crack spacing. The simulations pursue the tension stiffening effect up to failure.
